Year 5

Year 5 have had some fabulous ideas for the Mayan masks they have been designing. Their use of colour and shape has been impressive and we cannot wait to finish them off next week. This should help them get into the mood for writing their stories set in Mayan times. They now have some interesting detail to show these are set in a different culture after their research of previous weeks. In topic, they wrote super persuasive texts as gods to persuade others to worship them. In Maths we have been tackling some tricky problems and converting length.

This week we have been looking at introductions and paragraphs to help us write our persuasive texts. The children have shown that they can understand and summarise arguments. In RE we have been looking at how stories help believers and found some creative ways to present our thoughts – comic strips, poems, raps…. We really enjoyed science this week as we used a model to demonstrate how food is digested and then nutrients are spread throughout the body. This involved making some poo, much to some children’s disgust!

year 5 update
Last week Year 5 were lucky enough to go to York Museum for our amazing space day. We got to take part in some awesome activities. First we got to learn about telecopes and made some ourselves. Next we went to the York observatory. This is where they keep a massive telescope and the roof opened. Finally we got to go into the brillant cosmo dome. This was a blacked out room where we watched the stars and planets go by. We had a fantatsic day!

Year 5 update
This week we have been very busy in outer space. We leant the names of the planets and used different types of food to investigate the size of each planet. Mercury was the size of a peppercorn and Juptier was the size of a huge watermelon.
In Maths we have been learning about tricky fractions. We have been finding fractions of numbers and finding equivalent fractions. (This means two fractions that are equal or the same)
Next week we are going on a speacil trip to YORK MUSEUM, we can't wait!!
